Burghley House is a splendorously stately sixteenth century Elizabethan country house near the town of Stamford in Lincolnshire, England. The village of Burghley itself was abandoned by 1450; and the failure to locate it is because archaeologists believe it lies beneath this house. Which is more than a little creepy. Anyway, the domicile also contains baroque carvings from that famous wood-carver with the best name ever: Grinling Gibbons.
The house has played host for such stellar films and programmes as The Da Vinci Code, Pride & Prejudice, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, and Royal Upstairs Downstairs, 2011.
